How many opportunities have we missed because we were waiting for someone to approve our next step? How many dreams have remained untouched because we wanted someone to tell us that we were ready? Sometimes, the greatest barrier to our growth is not a lack of ability, resources, or opportunity. It is the belief that we need permission from other people before we can become who God created us to be.
As women of faith, we must understand that personal growth is a responsibility, not something that requires everyone’s approval. We can respect people, value advice, and appreciate guidance without allowing their opinions to control our future.
God has placed gifts, abilities, ideas, and potential within each of us. Our responsibility is to develop them, use them wisely, and become good stewards of what He has entrusted to us.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) reminds us:
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
We were not created to spend our entire lives doubting ourselves or waiting for others to recognise our potential. We can begin growing today, trusting God to guide our steps.
1. Understand That Your Growth Is Your Responsibility
One of the most important lessons we can learn is that nobody can take responsibility for our personal development on our behalf.
Our parents, friends, partners, mentors, and spiritual leaders can encourage us, but they cannot do the work for us. They cannot read every book we need to read, develop every skill we need to develop, or make every decision that will move us forward.
Growth requires personal commitment.
We must become intentional about improving our knowledge, strengthening our character, developing our abilities, and deepening our relationship with God.
Instead of waiting for someone to motivate us, we can create habits that encourage continuous improvement.
Galatians 6:5 (NIV) says:
“For each one should carry their own load.”
We must take ownership of our lives. If we desire a different future, we must be willing to make different choices today.
2. Stop Seeking Approval From Everyone
Seeking advice is wise. Depending on everyone’s approval is exhausting.
Sometimes we delay important decisions because we are afraid of what people will say. We worry about criticism, rejection, misunderstanding, or being judged for choosing a different path.
We may want to start a business but fear that people will laugh at our ideas. We may want to return to school but worry that others will consider us too old. We may want to pursue a leadership opportunity but doubt whether people will accept us.
The truth is that we cannot build meaningful lives around the expectations of everyone else.
Galatians 1:10 (NIV) asks:
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?”
This verse reminds us to examine whose approval guides our decisions.
We should welcome constructive advice, listen to wise counsel, and remain teachable. However, we must not allow fear of people’s opinions to prevent us from taking responsible steps toward growth.
3. Recognise the Gifts God Has Placed Within You
Every woman has something valuable to contribute.
Some women are gifted in leadership. Others have talents in teaching, business, creativity, administration, communication, hospitality, technology, or caring for others.
Unfortunately, many women overlook their gifts because they compare themselves with people who appear more successful.
We may see someone operating a successful business and assume that we have nothing valuable to offer. We may see a woman confidently speaking before an audience and believe that our own voice is not important.
But someone else’s gift does not cancel our own.
Romans 12:6 (NIV) says:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”
Our responsibility is to discover, develop, and use what God has given us.
We can begin by asking ourselves:
- What activities come naturally to us?
- What skills do people often appreciate in us?
- What problems do we enjoy solving?
- What knowledge or experience can we share?
- What abilities have we neglected?
- Where can our gifts serve others?
We should stop overlooking our abilities simply because they look different from someone else’s.
4. Stop Waiting Until You Feel Completely Ready
One common reason women delay growth is the desire to have everything perfectly prepared before beginning.
We want more confidence, more money, more knowledge, more connections, and more experience.
Preparation is important, but waiting for perfect conditions can keep us in the same position for years.
Consider the woman who wants to start a business. She may spend months thinking about the perfect business name, logo, location, and marketing strategy. Meanwhile, she never takes the first practical step.
We must understand that growth often happens while we are taking action, not before we begin.
Zechariah 4:10 (NIV) says:
“Who dares despise the day of small things?”
Small beginnings are valuable.
We can start with available resources, learn from our mistakes, and improve as we progress.
We do not need to know everything before taking the next responsible step. We need enough knowledge to begin wisely and the willingness to keep learning.
5. Invest in Your Personal Development
A growing woman understands the importance of investing in herself.
Personal development is not selfish. It is part of becoming a better steward of our gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities.
We can invest in ourselves through education, reading, mentorship, training, practical experience, and spiritual development.
We should not limit learning to formal education. There are many ways to acquire useful knowledge.
For example, we can:
- Read books that improve our thinking.
- Attend workshops and seminars.
- Learn practical digital skills.
- Develop better communication abilities.
- Study successful leaders.
- Seek guidance from experienced people.
- Improve our financial knowledge.
- Participate in meaningful discussions.
- Study the Bible consistently.
Proverbs 18:15 (NIV) says:
“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.”
A queen who commits to learning continually increases her ability to make wise decisions and contribute meaningfully to society.
We cannot expect to grow into a new level of responsibility while refusing to grow in knowledge and understanding.
6. Stop Comparing Your Journey With Other Women’s Journeys
Comparison is one of the greatest distractions from personal growth.
Social media allows us to see other people’s achievements, businesses, families, ministries, careers, and lifestyles. However, we rarely see the complete journey behind those achievements.
We see the results but not always the preparation, challenges, sacrifices, and lessons.
When we compare our beginning with another person’s progress, we can easily become discouraged.
Instead of asking why another woman is ahead of us, we should ask what we can learn from her journey.
We can celebrate her achievements while remaining committed to our own responsibilities.
2 Corinthians 10:12 warns against measuring ourselves by comparing ourselves with others.
Our assignment is not to become another woman. It is to become the best version of ourselves while remaining faithful to God.
7. Surround Yourself With People Who Encourage Growth
The people around us can influence our attitudes, decisions, and ambitions.
Some relationships encourage learning, healthy ambition, accountability, and positive change. Others may discourage every new idea or make us feel uncomfortable whenever we attempt something different.
We should intentionally build relationships with people who challenge us to think better, act wisely, and become more responsible.
This does not mean avoiding everyone who disagrees with us. Constructive criticism is valuable. What we need to avoid is an environment where discouragement becomes the normal response to every attempt at improvement.
Proverbs 13:20 (NIV) says:
“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
We should seek mentors, supportive friends, experienced professionals, and fellow believers who value personal and spiritual development.
A healthy circle does not simply celebrate our achievements. It also encourages us to keep growing when progress becomes difficult.
8. Develop the Courage to Make Decisions
Growth requires decisions.
We must decide what deserves our attention, which opportunities to pursue, what habits to change, and which responsibilities require greater commitment.
Indecision can keep us trapped between what we currently have and what we hope to achieve.
Sometimes we spend too much time asking different people what they think instead of taking time to pray, evaluate the available information, seek wise counsel, and make a responsible decision.
James 1:5 (NIV) encourages us:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.”
We should invite God into our decision-making.
We should also understand that making a decision does not guarantee that everything will happen exactly as planned. Sometimes we learn through experience and adjust our direction.
A growing queen is willing to make thoughtful decisions, accept responsibility, and learn along the way.
9. Stop Allowing Fear of Failure to Control Your Future
Fear of failure can prevent us from exploring opportunities that could help us grow.
We may avoid applying for a position because we fear rejection. We may avoid sharing our ideas because we fear criticism. We may avoid learning something new because we are uncomfortable being beginners.
However, mistakes and setbacks can provide valuable lessons.
We should not allow one unsuccessful experience to convince us that we are incapable of future success.
Proverbs 24:16 (NIV) says:
“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again.”
The important lesson is perseverance.
We can evaluate what went wrong, identify areas for improvement, seek advice, and try again when appropriate.
We do not have to be perfect to make progress.
10. Create a Personal Growth Plan
Desiring growth is important, but turning that desire into practical action is even more important.
A personal growth plan helps us identify where we are, where we want to go, and what steps we need to take.
We can divide our growth into different areas:
Spiritual growth: Strengthen our prayer life, study Scripture, and develop a deeper relationship with God.
Intellectual growth: Read more, learn new skills, and improve our ability to think critically.
Professional growth: Develop our careers, improve our qualifications, and explore meaningful opportunities.
Financial growth: Learn budgeting, saving, responsible investing, and financial planning.
Relationship growth: Improve communication, become better listeners, and develop healthy relationships.
Personal growth: Become more disciplined, organised, responsible, and intentional.
We can set monthly goals and review our progress regularly.
Habakkuk 2:2 (NIV) says:
“Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.”
Writing down our goals gives us something clear to work toward.
We should remember that meaningful growth is built through consistent actions, not occasional bursts of motivation.
11. Understand That Growth Requires Discipline
Motivation may inspire us to begin, but discipline helps us remain consistent.
There will be days when we do not feel motivated to read, study, exercise, work on our business, or complete important responsibilities.
During such moments, we need to remember why we started.
Discipline means doing what is necessary even when it is not convenient.
We can develop discipline through simple daily practices:
- Keeping our promises to ourselves.
- Managing our time wisely.
- Completing important tasks.
- Following through on commitments.
- Reducing unnecessary distractions.
- Maintaining healthy routines.
- Reviewing our progress.
- Learning from mistakes.
1 Corinthians 9:24–25 teaches us about the discipline required of those who run a race.
We should approach personal development with the same commitment.
12. Take Action on the Opportunities Before You
Sometimes we spend so much time waiting for bigger opportunities that we overlook the ones already available.
We may be waiting for a promotion while ignoring opportunities to improve our current performance. We may be waiting for business capital while failing to develop a business plan. We may be waiting for recognition while neglecting the responsibilities already entrusted to us.
Faithfulness in small responsibilities prepares us for greater opportunities.
Luke 16:10 (NIV) says:
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
We should learn to value small opportunities.
Every skill we develop, every responsibility we handle well, and every useful relationship we build can contribute to our growth.
We must not underestimate the power of starting where we are.
Conclusion: Your Growth Begins With a Decision
Dear Queen, we do not need to spend our lives waiting for someone to recognise our potential before we begin developing it.
We can learn. We can improve. We can explore new opportunities. We can develop our gifts and become more effective in the responsibilities God has entrusted to us.
We should respect wise counsel without becoming dependent on approval. We should remain humble without making ourselves small. We should celebrate other women without questioning our own value.
Most importantly, we should remember that God has given each of us gifts and responsibilities that deserve to be developed with wisdom, discipline, and faithfulness.
The next chapter of our growth does not have to begin when everyone agrees with us. It can begin when we make a decision to become intentional about the lives we are building.
Stop waiting for permission to learn. Stop waiting for permission to improve. Stop waiting for permission to use your gifts.
Take the next wise step. Develop what God has placed within you. Become a woman of wisdom, substance, and purpose.
You do not need everyone’s approval to become a better version of yourself. You need the courage to begin, the discipline to continue, and the wisdom to remain guided by God.
A Prayer for Personal Growth
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts, abilities, and opportunities You have placed in our lives. Give us the courage to step beyond our fears and the wisdom to recognise the opportunities before us.
Help us overcome the need for constant approval. Teach us to make wise decisions, develop our abilities, and remain faithful in every responsibility.
Remove the spirit of comparison and discouragement from our hearts. Surround us with people who encourage positive growth and help us become better stewards of our gifts.
May our growth bring glory to Your name and become a blessing to the people around us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
